The Bautzen train station, once in disrepair, has been awarded 'Bahnhof des Jahres 2024' by the Allianz pro Schiene for its remarkable renovation.
Key features that impressed the jury include the station's restored facade, bright and open interiors, and improved traveler amenities.
The station's revitalization was spurred by a 2016 Kreistag decision to house local government offices within the building, leading to private investment and renovation from 2017 to 2020.
Despite its accolades, the station could improve by adding a changing area in the restrooms and extending weekend hours.
A special award was also given to the Sörup station, recognized for its community-driven enhancements and amenities uncommon in rural areas.
