Bathla Group Secures Two-Week Lifeline as More Than 200 Staff Are Stood Down

Short-term funding keeps a small number of projects running to give administrators time to seek emergency cash and limit losses for lenders, homebuyers, local communities.

Overview

  • Administrators from Teneo were appointed after Bathla entered voluntary administration in late August and have disclosed about A$3.3–3.4 billion in liabilities to creditors.
  • Teneo reached a short-term funding deal with five lenders to maintain limited operations for roughly two weeks while it seeks further emergency funding reported at about A$20 million.
  • About 213 of Bathla’s roughly 350 staff were stood down and construction on many sites was suspended because the temporary funding only covers projects tied to the participating lenders.
  • Creditors include more than 40 private credit lenders with individual exposures from roughly A$1.5 million up to more than A$340 million, raising the prospect of losses and stress in the private credit market.
  • Regulators have issued rectification and prohibition orders on specific Bathla projects, and major banks and market analysts including Morgan Stanley warn the collapse could ripple into consumer spending and the wider economy.
