Basque Towns Pack the Weekend With Language, Culture and Sport as Gau Beltza Nears

Municipal backing with grassroots groups turns late October into a community showcase.

Overview

  • Dozens of municipalities will mark Gau Beltza/Arimen Gaua on October 31 with kid-friendly workshops, lantern-lit processions, chestnut roasts and symbolic “burning of fears” rituals.
  • The Berbalagun 2025–26 season has been relaunched in Galdakao and Basauri, a free Euskara social-practice network jointly promoted by both town councils, AEK and local language schools after drawing about 260 participants last year.
  • Sunday’s Euskal Herriko First Division aizkolari final starts at 12:00 in Azkoitia’s Gurea fronton, with defending champion Iker Vicente among six competitors and tickets sold on site for €40 from 10:00.
  • Kulturaz’s Sorginorratzak youth labs have shifted from a completed magic unit to circus workshops running October 29–November 19, advancing a school-year program that links children with local creators.
  • Weekend culture also features a 25-stall artisans and producers market in Amasa on Saturday morning and a Friday 19:00 ‘Arestiren etxekoak’ talk-concert in Donostia with Bernardo Atxaga, Joseba Sarrionandia and Maite Larburu, while the Gipuzkoa trinkete leather-paleta title recently went to Iñaki Badiola and Manex Prieto 40–24 in Irura.
