Basque Parliament Agrees to Add Official Basque Texts to National Reference Corpus

The transfer gives Euskaltzaindia authoritative parliamentary language for use in lexicography, legal terminology guidance, training of parliamentarians, public outreach

Overview

  • Eusko Legebiltzarra and Euskaltzaindia have renewed a four-year cooperation that formalizes the transfer of officially published parliamentary Basque texts into the Euskararen Erreferentzia Corpusa for indexing and analysis.
  • The agreement requires Euskaltzaindia to index, run statistical analyses on and apply lexicographic treatment to parliamentary texts so they can enrich the Academy’s dictionary and language resources.
  • The pact expands practical work beyond text transfer to include technical advisory services for the Parliament, explanatory reports on official-language matters, two training courses for deputies and a planned 'Pirinioetako hizkuntzak' exhibition this autumn.
  • Euskaltzaindia’s Gipuzkoa delegation has presented Jon Sarasua as the sole candidate to fill Mikel Zalbide’s seat as a full euskaltzain, with final confirmation expected at the Academy’s September plenary if procedural conditions are met.
  • The renewal builds on a collaboration first signed in 2011 and aims to strengthen institutional channels for terminology, legal-language guidance and public visibility of Basque across territories and registers.
