Basque Government and IBM Unveil Europe’s First IBM Quantum System Two in San Sebastián

The launch kicks off a talent-building push under Euskadi’s IKUR 2030 plan to develop real-world quantum applications for industry and research.

Overview

  • The IBM-Euskadi Quantum Computational Center opened with an IBM Quantum System Two powered by a 156‑qubit Heron processor on the Ikerbasque campus.
  • The site becomes only the second System Two deployment outside the United States, following an installation in Japan.
  • Center members now have operational access to the system and IBM resources to pursue projects in materials, energy, biomedicine and artificial intelligence.
  • The Basque Government has committed €153 million through 2028 covering the computer, the new facility and maintenance.
  • IBM describes the platform as scalable and set for hybrid use with an onsite classical supercomputer to enable utility‑scale algorithms.
