Basketball Legend Gus Alfieri Dies at 87
The former St. John’s star and successful St. Anthony’s coach leaves a lasting legacy in basketball.
- Gus Alfieri, a former St. John’s University basketball star and long-time St. Anthony’s high school coach, died at the age of 87.
- Alfieri helped lead St. John’s to the 1959 NIT championship, scoring 15 points during a 76-71 win over Bradley at Madison Square Garden.
- As a coach, Alfieri led St. Anthony’s High School to a 328-106 record, two New York State championships and four NSCHSAA crowns.
- He ran the All-American Basketball Camp for more than 50 years and was inducted into the St. John’s Hall of Fame in 2023.
- Alfieri authored multiple books including “Lapchick: The Life of a Legendary Player and Coach in the Glory Days of Basketball” and “The Heart of a Champion: A Basketball Coach’s Memoir of a Championship Team”.
