Barzal and Maccelli Clear Major Practice Step and Edge Toward Islanders Return
Medical staff will decide whether they travel or play.
Overview
- Both Mathew Barzal and Matias Maccelli skated as full participants and removed their red non-contact jerseys during Saturday’s gameday skate.
- The team sent Barzal, Maccelli and defenseman Ryan Pulock for further medical evaluation to determine travel status for the upcoming California road trip.
- Coach Pete DeBoer said medical doctors will make final clearance decisions, so return timing will follow the Islanders’ staged rehab process.
- Barzal is coming back from a prior kneecap surgery and training-camp inflammation, while Maccelli has recovered earlier than his initial 2–4 week estimate after an Oct. 17 lower-body injury.
- If cleared, the two forwards would add top-six speed and power-play options and ease depth strain, but Pulock and Calum Ritchie remain in more cautious recovery phases.
