Barton Springs Aquifer Enters Stage 3 Exceptional Drought, With Mandatory Cuts Starting Oct. 1

A sustained rainfall deficit drove groundwater at the Lovelady well to the Stage 3 threshold.

Overview

  • Starting Oct. 1, more than 120 permit holders must cut groundwater pumping by 30% to 100%, including private wells, utilities, and the cities of Buda and Kyle.
  • Noncompliance may trigger monthly drought penalties under district rules.
  • The district does not regulate end-use customers of groundwater utilities, so residents should consult their providers for restrictions.
  • The 10-day average at South Austin's Lovelady well hit 457.0 feet, the Stage 3 threshold, after years of below-normal rainfall totaling a 31-inch deficit since 2022.
  • This is the district’s second Stage 3 designation since its founding, following a similar declaration in December 2023.
