BART Train Attacker Charged with Attempted Murder

Jovany Portades faces multiple charges after a violent knife attack on a San Francisco BART train left a woman with life-threatening injuries.

  • Jovany Portades, 34, was charged with attempted murder following an unprovoked knife attack on a 54-year-old woman aboard a BART train on November 2.
  • The attack occurred as the train approached the 24th Street/Mission station, where Portades slashed the woman's neck, face, and mouth.
  • Portades fled the scene but was arrested the next day at the Fruitvale BART station after being recognized by a station agent.
  • In addition to attempted murder, Portades is charged with using a deadly weapon and inflicting great bodily injury, and he is ineligible for probation.
  • District Attorney Brooke Jenkins emphasized the need for public transit safety and has moved to have Portades detained before trial due to the threat he poses.
