Chief Richard Johnston and Sgt. Brett Carlton spoke to reporters Tuesday at a news conference in Barrie, Ont., updating the public on an investigation into the killing and dismembering of two people they say lived at the same encampment as their alleged killer.

Overview

  • Robert Ladouceur, 52, faces 33 charges including first- and second-degree murder and two counts of indignity to a body, along with weapons and alleged drug‑trafficking offences.
  • Investigators say the accused and both victims had lived together at the Victoria Street encampment at some point over the past two to three years and that the murders were not random.
  • Human remains linked to the case were found at the Barrie encampment and at a property in Huntsville, with additional evidence gathered from a residence in North Simcoe County.
  • Police arrested Ladouceur in Midland on Aug. 2 after he fled an approach by officers; he has been denied bail and is due back in court Friday.
  • Chief Rich Johnston said no additional suspects or victims are being sought and called the case isolated, while the investigation continues and motive has not been disclosed.
