Overview
- The inaugural shipment departed the Darwin LNG terminal on January 25 aboard the Kool Blizzard for delivery to Japan’s Sakai terminal on a delivered ex-ship basis.
- Santos operates the Barossa project with a 50% stake alongside partners SK Innovation E&S at 37.5% and JERA at 12.5%.
- SK Innovation E&S said production has begun and it is entitled to about 1.3 million tons of LNG per year for 20 years.
- Following first gas at the BW Opal FPSO in September 2025, LNG output began after Darwin LNG life-extension and cool-down work.
- Santos says the project reached this stage close to plan and budget after navigating regulatory and legal challenges, and it projects Northern Territory benefits including roughly 300 permanent jobs, A$2.5 billion in wages and contracts over 20 years, and an Aboriginal Future Fund of up to A$10 million annually.
