Barnier Leads First Round in Paris By-Election, Faces Bredin in Sept. 28 Runoff

With only about one voter in four participating, the rematch will serve as a barometer of centre-right cohesion.

Overview

  • Final results show Michel Barnier at 45.2% and Socialist Frédérique Bredin at 31.4%, sending both to a second round.
  • Turnout was roughly 26%, and because no candidate surpassed 50% of votes and the validation threshold, a runoff is required next Sunday.
  • RN’s Thierry Mariani took about 7.5% and Reconquête’s Hilaire Bouyé around 6% in the constituency spanning Paris’s 5th, 6th and 7th arrondissements.
  • The by-election follows the Constitutional Council’s July 11 annulment of Renaissance deputy Jean Laussucq’s 2024 victory over campaign-finance irregularities.
  • A Barnier win would likely make him the only LR deputy from Paris, after a summer deal with Rachida Dati secured his nomination and his choice of Horizons mayor Florence Berthout as substitute irritated Renaissance.
