Barnard College Settles Antisemitism Suit, Enacts Oversight and Protest Curbs

The settlement drops Barnard from litigation against Jewish students with Columbia remaining under legal challenge

Overview

  • The agreement removes Barnard College from a Title VI lawsuit filed by Jewish and Israeli students while the related suit against Columbia University continues.
  • Barnard will appoint a dedicated Title VI coordinator to review allegations of discrimination, produce an annual report and apply federal civil rights guidance.
  • The college will ban face masks at demonstrations and enforce strict time, place and manner restrictions on campus protests.
  • All students, faculty and staff must complete training on Barnard’s anti-discrimination and harassment policies and receive an annual zero-tolerance message on antisemitism.
  • Beginning fall 2025, Barnard students will receive free access to courses at the Jewish Theological Seminary and the school will consider the IHRA definition of antisemitism when addressing complaints.
