Barmer Survey: Only 48% of German Teens Have Begun HPV Vaccination

Findings reveal persistent knowledge shortfalls, prompting fresh calls for targeted education.

Overview

  • Barmer’s nationally representative poll of 2,000 adolescents (autumn 2024) found 48% of 14–17-year-olds had at least one HPV dose, with 39% fully vaccinated and 9% still completing doses.
  • Uptake differs by sex, with 55% of girls and 42% of boys reporting at least one shot.
  • Awareness remains shallow as 65% have heard of the vaccine but only 31% feel informed about HPV consequences and 36% about the vaccination itself.
  • Vaccination decisions were most influenced by parents (76%), followed by doctors (47%) and fear of cancer (16%), while schools (8%) and social media (4%) played minor roles.
  • Among the unvaccinated, 32% have not engaged with the topic, 15% fear side effects, and 11% consider the shot unnecessary, despite Stiko’s recommendation to vaccinate at ages 9–14.
