Barmer Report Finds Wide East–West Gaps in Heart Failure and Migraine

Barmer cites older populations in eastern states as the main driver of the gap.

Overview

  • The 2023 analysis reports heart failure at 70–77 per 1,000 in Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony, versus 25–26 in Hamburg and Bremen.
  • Barmer attributes much of the disparity to age structure, noting average ages of 47.3 years in the new states compared with 44.2 years in the old states.
  • Migraine and other headache disorders also vary, with 33 per 1,000 in Bremen and Hamburg compared with 41 in Thuringia.
  • County-level migraine figures range from 26 to 57 per 1,000, spanning Altmarkkreis Salzwedel (Saxony-Anhalt) to Hildburghausen (Thuringia).
  • The health and social-care sector shows the highest headache or migraine consultation rate in 2023, at 73 per 1,000 employed.
