Overview

  • On July 28 a commercial barge struck a sailboat carrying a camp counselor and five children aged 8 to 12 near Star Island, causing the vessel to capsize in Biscayne Bay.
  • Two children were pronounced dead at local hospitals and two remain in critical condition while the adult counselor and one child were released after evaluation.
  • Miami Beach Fire Rescue, City of Miami Fire Rescue, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and Coast Guard divers conducted a coordinated water-rescue effort to recover all six occupants.
