Bardsey Island Seeks Farming Tenants for Off-Grid Conservation Role

Expressions of interest are open until 7 November for a joint venture tenancy set to begin with a move in September 2026.

Overview

  • The Bardsey Island Trust has invited a family or couple to join Ynys Enlli’s core community as conservation farming tenants.
  • The role includes managing about 200 sheep and 25 Welsh Black cattle under a conservation-focused agreement.
  • Applicants are expected to have farming experience, ideally speak Welsh, and be ready for off-grid living with no mains power, shops, schools, cars, or routine telecoms.
  • Incoming tenants will be mentored by current farmer Gareth Roberts, who has managed the island’s holding since 2007, with support from a five-year conservation plan.
  • The tiny island off Gwynedd’s Llŷn Peninsula has a very small year-round population, hosts seasonal visitors, and was designated Europe’s first International Dark Sky Sanctuary in 2023.
