Barcelona’s El Prat to Shift T1 Facade 38 Meters, Raze Old Control Tower in €700 Million Overhaul

Aena has begun installing CT scanners, the first step toward a T1 rebuild that creates space for larger security checkpoints and smoother passenger flow.

Overview

  • Work starts now on 52 EDS/CT screening machines across the airport, a €39 million program set to finish in early 2027 and allowing liquids and electronics to stay in carry-ons.
  • The T1 project will add about 70,000 square meters for check-in and screening and will reconfigure curbside traffic, with temporary access changes during construction.
  • Aena plans to begin moving the facade in 2028, with phased works running to 2031–2032, and the disused 2005-era control tower will be demolished as part of the scheme.
  • The basic design is underway, the facade will be replicated, and decisions such as the timing of the tower’s teardown and the placement of Joan Miró’s mural remain pending.
  • Design duties were awarded to a joint venture of Ayesa, Viarium and One Works, and the T1 overhaul sits within a €3.2 billion expansion as political talks over governance continue and investor TCI voices concerns.
