Overview

  • Selected block interiors entered study phases this July with owner talks, expropriation proposals and plan amendments expected to unlock public access by 2030.
  • Eixample councilor Jordi Valls said interventions will use a mix of expropriations, urbanistic modifications and voluntary agreements to recover courtyards.
  • This week the council launched 95 micro-interventions across Nova Esquerra de l’Eixample under a €6.5 million plan that covers lighting, paving, greenery and two block interiors.
  • Since the first recovery at Torre de les Aigües in 1987, Barcelona has reclaimed 45 Cerdà-era interiors but none have reopened in the past five years.
  • Larger superblock redesigns in Sant Antoni are advancing with full implementation planned between 2026 and 2027 to expand pedestrian boulevards.
