Barcelona To Conduct Mobile Emergency Alert Test at 10 a.m. Monday

Officials plan to gauge coverage with an anonymous survey due to the system’s lack of automatic receipt confirmation.

Overview

  • At 10:00 on November 3, ES-Alert will be tested across Barcelona and the Barcelonès, Baix Llobregat, Maresme, Vallès Oriental and Vallès Occidental areas, reaching phones located there, including travelers, with authorities expecting over five million recipients.
  • The alert will sound with a loud, distinctive tone that stops once users interact with the screen, and residents are instructed not to call 112 during the drill.
  • The test message will display in Catalan, Spanish and English and clearly indicate that it is a Protecció Civil drill.
  • People who need to avoid the sound are advised to use airplane mode or switch off their devices, though some models may still emit the tone despite these steps.
  • After the test, the Generalitat will open an anonymous survey to report whether the alert was received, the language shown and the mobile operator, enabling evaluation of coverage and performance.
