Overview
- Barcelona's ornamental fountains, shut off since November 2023 during the worst drought in two centuries, are being progressively reactivated following the end of water restrictions on April 5, 2025.
- The first fountains to resume operation include the cascade at Parc de la Ciutadella and installations at Plaça de Catalunya, Passeig de Gràcia, and Jardinets de Gràcia.
- The reopening plan spans three phases: small fountains by June 2025, medium-sized fountains including the Font Màgica by October 2025, and larger installations by early 2026.
- The iconic Font Màgica de Montjuïc remains closed for renovations and is slated to reopen for the La Mercè festival in late September 2025 with enhanced lighting and sound systems.
- Barcelona City Council has allocated €6.6 million to upgrade 78 fountains, with improvements to continue through 2028, focusing on sustainability and heritage preservation.
