Barcelona Prosecutor Seeks Interrogation and New DNA Test in 2001 Helena Jubany Case After ‘Positive’ Results

An expanded DNA analysis on the victim’s jersey yielded findings prosecutors deem sufficient to trigger fresh genetic comparisons.

Overview

  • Following notification of ‘positive’ expanded DNA results, the Barcelona Provincial Prosecutor asked the Sabadell court to summon one person previously investigated in the case.
  • The prosecutor also requested reopening proceedings for a suspect whose case had been archived to obtain a genetic profile comparison, which La Vanguardia identifies as Ana Echaguibel.
  • La Vanguardia reports the Police Scientific Unit detected DNA consistent with Santiago Laiglesia on the victim’s jersey and a female profile that does not match Montserrat Careta.
  • In June the investigating judge directed police to locate preserved samples from Careta, whose biological material was retained by the National Institute of Toxicology after her 2002 death in custody.
  • Judicial action on the requests is pending, and ABC notes a prescription deadline for Echaguibel reported for October 7.
