Barcelona Orders Metropolitan Mobility Studies to Shape Access and Infrastructure to 2050

The city seeks to cut congestion by commissioning four corridor studies to guide public transport investment, regional coordination, long‑term infrastructure choices.

Overview

  • The City Council has formally commissioned Barcelona Regional through municipal company Bimsa to carry out linked studies of four main entry corridors: the Diagonal, Gran Via north, Gran Via south with Ronda Litoral south, and Meridiana.
  • The Meridiana study is already under way and is being developed alongside the reurbanization anteproject for the Fabra i Puig–Sarajevo bridge section.
  • Municipal data that will frame the analyses show about 2.1 million daily connecting trips with Barcelona and a pattern where private‑car use rises with distance from the city center.
  • Reports will model scenarios to 2030, 2040 and 2050, are due by the end of 2027, and are meant to inform choices such as a possible third rail tunnel under the Diagonal and how to adapt corridors for major projects like Sagrera, Vall d’Hebron and the Bellvitge biocluster.
  • The studies are designed to feed decisions by multiple authorities, so their impact will depend on agreement and funding from neighbouring municipalities, the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona, the Autoritat del Transport Metropolità and the Generalitat, with the potential to shift commuters to public transport and reduce peak‑hour congestion.
