Overview
- Transportes Metropolitanos de Barcelona will issue the tender for 39 new trainsets in July 2025 and award contracts in spring 2026 to prepare for service entry in 2029.
- Of the ordered trains, 22 will serve the future central section of Line 9—initially deployed on Line 2—and 17 will reinforce conventional lines, allocating six to L1, three to L2, four to L3 and four to L4.
- New rolling stock is expected to cut peak-hour intervals below three and a half minutes on all major lines, targeting frequencies of 2:38 on L1 and 2:50 on L2.
- The €331 million investment is funded by the Generalitat de Catalunya (51%), Barcelona City Council (24%) and the Área Metropolitana de Barcelona (24%).
- The procurement responds to post-pandemic ridership growth that set a 2024 record of 469 million annual trips and saw single-day peaks of 1.8 million validations.
