Overview
- Barcelona’s Juzgado de lo Social 11 ruled that 3,572 Glovo couriers were falsely classified as self-employed and establishes their employment relationship.
- The court found riders lacked control over assignments, client payments and contract terms, meeting Spain’s Workers’ Statute criteria for employees.
- Glovo can still appeal the June 25 decision and previously faced a €63.2 million labor inspection sanction in 2022 for 8,331 false self-employed riders.
- In response to judicial setbacks and Ley Rider requirements, Glovo plans to complete its shift to salaried delivery staff by July 2025.
- The company is also defending against a €295 million unfair competition lawsuit from Deliveroo and a public prosecutor’s investigation into alleged worker rights abuses.
