Overview

  • On May 30, Barcelona’s City Council approved a motion to suspend all institutional relations with the current Israeli government and dissolve its 1998 friendship pact with Tel Aviv until international law and Palestinian rights are upheld.
  • The measure bars Israeli government pavilions and arms companies from exhibiting at Fira de Barcelona events.
  • Council leaders also requested that the Port Authority prevent ships linked to arms trafficking with Israel from docking in Barcelona.
  • The motion passed with support from PSC, Comuns and ERC, while Junts abstained and PP and Vox voted against it.
  • Hamas praised Barcelona’s decision and called on other cities and countries to follow suit in isolating Israel over its Gaza operations.
