Overview

  • The Barcelona City Council’s Urbanism Commission approved the initial modification allowing the Palau Marcet expansion with support from PSC, Junts, PP and Vox against opposition from BComú and ERC.
  • The proposal calls for expanding the former Cine Comèdia by 45% to 9,755 m² through two new volumes while restoring protected facades on Gran Via and Paseo de Gràcia.
  • Stoneweg, Baroness Carmen Cervera and the Pla i Planàs family have committed over €100 million to finance the project under a public-private partnership.
  • The redesigned museum will dedicate 75 percent of its space to cultural exhibitions and reserve 25 percent for shops, educational facilities and a 450-seat auditorium.
  • After a public hearing phase for appeals, the expansion plan faces a final plenary vote in autumn 2025 before construction can proceed toward the museum’s 2027 opening.
