Barcelona Begins 10-Day Assembly of 40 Modular Public Housing Units

The Sants-Montjuïc project uses 48 factory-built modules to speed up construction ahead of a planned end-2026 handover.

Overview

  • Prefabricated modules started production in March and arrived on site fully equipped with kitchens and bathrooms.
  • The nine-storey block at 22-24 Carrilet Avenue will house 40 rental apartments for young residents and single-parent families alongside communal facilities on the lower floors.
  • Foundations and the first storey were completed conventionally earlier this year, and crews have now commenced the ten-day installation of the eight upper floors.
  • The €6.7 million project is one of nine industrialized housing schemes in Barcelona’s pipeline, contributing to a public portfolio of 421 units with 207 delivered and 109 under construction.
  • Modular construction is expected to halve build times compared with traditional methods while enhancing quality control, reducing emissions and improving worker safety.
