Barcelona Approves Santa Creu Facade and Cloister Works, Issues Massana Tender

The moves launch a phased push to make the Gardunya–Rubió i Lluch axis a new civic gateway for the Raval.

Overview

  • City officials approved more than €2.7 million to restore the old Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, covering a €2.2 million, 2,400 m² intervention in the cloister and €0.5 million for the main facade.
  • The cloister plan targets consolidation of vaults and arches, stone cleaning and a full roof renewal, with facade cleaning and element restoration carried out in parallel.
  • Works are scheduled to begin before summer 2026 with the facade and cloister executed concurrently, according to timelines outlined by the municipal government.
  • Barcelona has tendered the rehabilitation of the former Escola Massana to add about 1,000 m² of teaching and workshop space for the Escola d’Art Massana, with an indicative cap of €1.98 million after the building’s January eviction.
  • A new pedestrian passage linking Jardins de Rubió i Lluch and Plaça Gardunya, under construction since July and budgeted at roughly €825,000 for about 535 m², is expected to open in 2026 alongside market upgrades at La Boqueria focused on the Gardunya facade and a more balanced offer.
