Barcelona Airport Begins T1 Overhaul With New EU‑Compliant Security Scanners

The security upgrade opens a phased revamp to boost capacity, with the runway plan still under EU review.

Overview

  • Aena starts installing 52 advanced screening machines in T1 this week to meet new EU rules and speed checks by avoiding the removal of liquids and electronics.
  • Work on the main T1 security area will proceed in phases through the first quarter of 2027, and the airport warns of temporary access closures and traffic rerouting.
  • The next major step moves the terminal’s facade 38 meters toward the parking area, demolishes the old control tower, and adds about 70,000 square meters from 2028 to roughly 2031–2032.
  • The security equipment carries a €39 million budget, while the T1 reform is estimated at €700 million within a broader €3.2 billion expansion plan.
  • A new satellite terminal is slated to begin during the 2027–2031 period, and the proposed 500‑meter runway extension remains pending approval from Brussels.
