Overview
- PWD officials announced on Saturday that Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the completed Phase III corridor on September 29 with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta present.
- The new elevated stretch will connect Mayur Vihar Phase I with Sarai Kale Khan and merge with the existing Barapullah to create about 9 km of largely signal-free carriageway for east–south movement.
- Engineers say both connecting ramps and the extra-dosed bridge across the Yamuna are finished and final ceremonial preparations are under way for the end-September opening.
- The project was approved in 2014, begun in 2015, missed multiple deadlines and saw costs rise from about Rs 1,260 crore to roughly Rs 1,635 crore, with delays blamed on land issues, tree clearances, Yamuna works and the pandemic.
- While officials highlight a dedicated cycle track and pedestrian paths and say the corridor should reduce traffic on NH-24, the DND Flyway and Ring Road, the Delhi Anti-Corruption Branch has registered an ongoing probe into alleged irregularities that could keep accountability questions open after inauguration.
