Bar Council Suspends Lawyer After Attempted Shoe Attack on CJI Gavai in Supreme Court

The response now rests with a disciplinary probe after police released the lawyer in the absence of a court complaint.

Overview

  • A 71-year-old advocate tried to remove and throw a shoe at Chief Justice B.R. Gavai during case mentions in Court No. 1 before security intervened, and the CJI calmly directed proceedings to continue.
  • The lawyer was identified as Rakesh Kishore of Mayur Vihar, who shouted slogans about Sanatan Dharma as he was escorted out, with police later recovering a note carrying a similar message.
  • The Bar Council of India suspended Kishore’s licence with immediate effect, debarred him from practice pending disciplinary proceedings, and issued a show-cause notice.
  • Delhi Police questioned Kishore for roughly three hours and released him after officials said no complaint had been lodged by the Supreme Court office, noting that coordination with the court registry is ongoing.
  • Political leaders and bar bodies condemned the incident, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling it utterly condemnable after speaking to the CJI, and SCBA and SCAORA issuing strong rebukes.
