Banxico Says SPEI Update Delayed Transfers, Not a Total Outage

The central bank says the planned update caused delays, not a full outage.

Overview

  • A scheduled maintenance window on October 24 from 18:00 to 20:00 temporarily slowed or interrupted interbank transfers processed through SPEI.
  • More than 50 institutions, including BBVA, Banorte, Santander, Citibanamex, HSBC, Scotiabank, Banco Azteca, Nu, Ualá and Caja Popular Mexicana, coordinated the update.
  • Banxico described the rollout as a long‑planned security and stability enhancement, with media citing sources saying it was prepared over 18 months and executed in roughly 1.5 hours.
  • Banks warned customers to anticipate payments, and Nu cautioned that card payments made during the window could be rejected and later accrue interest if deadlines were missed.
  • Apps, ATM withdrawals and card purchases continued working, and users can verify or locate transfers via Banxico’s SPEI Monitor and the Comprobante Electrónico de Pago (CEP).
