Overview
- Effective Oct. 10, banks must classify incoming family F 20‑peso notes as “Billetes en Proceso de Retiro y/o Desmonetizados” and deposit them with the central bank.
- The polymer note, first issued Aug. 20, 2007 with Juárez on the front and Monte Albán on the back, remains legal tender while it continues to circulate.
- Banxico says the withdrawal is progressive with no final cutoff date, and notes sent to banks will not return to the public and may be destroyed or held in custody.
- The move is part of a multi‑year plan to favor longer‑lasting 20‑peso coins and the newer family G series; officials indicate the note ceases printing in 2025.
- Other family F denominations, including the 50‑peso and 1,000‑peso notes, are also being phased out, and some withdrawn bills are drawing higher asking prices on online marketplaces.
