Banxico Marks 100 Years With Silver 10-Peso Coin and Special-Legend Banknotes in Circulation

Mexico’s leaders used the centennial to reaffirm an inflation-only mandate for Banxico.

Overview

  • Banxico’s limited two-ounce .999 silver coin carries a 10‑peso face value, measures 48 mm, weighs 62.206 g, and is struck by Casa de Moneda.
  • The coin is being sold through authorized distributors, including Casa de Moneda de México and the Museo Interactivo de Economía (MIDE).
  • Commemorative banknotes in 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 pesos feature the legend “100 Aniversario 1925-2025” and can be obtained at banks at face value.
  • The banknotes circulate as ordinary legal tender alongside existing designs.
  • President Claudia Sheinbaum said she will not seek to expand the central bank’s mandate, and the Governing Board unanimously backed keeping a single inflation-focused mandate, with subgovernor Galia Borja citing New Zealand’s shift to a single focus in 2023.
