Overview

  • Gujarat Forest Department and Reliance’s Vantara translocated 20 spotted deer into a 70-hectare protected zone in Banni on July 15
  • Authorities have introduced 250 prey animals, including blackbucks and spotted deer, to support the planned cheetah reintroduction
  • Quarantine and soft-release bomas, a cheetah breeding centre, CCTV monitoring and a dedicated veterinary facility have been installed within a 600-hectare enclosure
  • Joint field assessments by the forest department and Vantara informed habitat restoration measures such as invasive species control and native grass regeneration
  • The National Tiger Conservation Authority is in talks with Namibia, South Africa and Kenya to bring five male and five female cheetahs by year-end
