Banks Urge Users to Set MTU Limits Before Oct. 1 Rollout in Mexico

To curb digital fraud, the CNBV set a 1,500‑UDI default for users who do not choose a limit, with free in‑app changes available.

Overview

  • - From Oct. 1, banks must offer the Monto Transaccional del Usuario (MTU) in apps and online so each customer can cap outgoing digital transfers such as SPEI, CoDi and Dimo.
  • - Users who do nothing will get an automatic cap of 1,500 UDIS (about 12,500–12,800 pesos), and operations above that limit may be blocked or require extra authentication.
  • - The MTU becomes mandatory in operation on Jan. 1, 2026; until then, banks are guiding customers to configure limits now to avoid defaults.
  • - The rule covers traditional banks, not fintechs or sofipos for now; Level 1 (N1) accounts are exempt, and in‑branch transactions, card purchases and transfers between a user’s own accounts are not subject to the MTU.
  • - Regulators clarified accounts will not be canceled for failing to activate the MTU, and banks must allow free, electronic adjustments at any time, including per‑operation, daily, weekly or monthly settings.
