Bangladeshi National Arrested in Hooghly for Alleged Use of Dead Voter’s 2002 Form

Investigators are examining how an old enumeration form resurfaced during West Bengal’s Special Intensive Revision.

Overview

  • Residents in Mathurdanga, Dankuni, detained the suspect on Wednesday night after the deceased man’s brother noticed a submission in his name, and police took him into custody.
  • Police say the man allegedly used the 2002 SIR enumeration form of Mahasin/Mohsin Khan, who died in 2015, and attached his own photograph to seek entry on the rolls.
  • The accused told reporters he purchased the form and created fake documents, including Aadhaar and a voter card, for about Rs 4,000, which authorities are now verifying.
  • A case has been registered, police will seek custody for interrogation, and the probe includes how the form was obtained and whether a Booth Level Officer or others were involved.
  • The incident has raised fresh concerns over the circulation of archival voter records and gaps in verification during the ongoing roll revision exercise.
