Bangladesh Says Most 2025 Incidents Involving Minorities Were Non-Communal in Official Review

The interim government cites verified police records to challenge portrayals of a communal surge.

Overview

  • A yearlong police-record review counted 645 incidents affecting minorities in 2025, with 71 classified as having communal elements and 574 deemed non-communal.
  • Communal cases included 38 temple vandalism reports, eight arson attacks, one theft, one murder and 23 other incidents such as threats, provocative posts and damage to worship pavilions.
  • Police filed cases in 50 of the communal incidents with 50 arrests reported, while non-communal incidents saw 390 cases, 498 arrests and 154 unnatural-death reports.
  • Dhaka’s release follows India’s January 9 call for swift, firm action on attacks and its caution against attributing such cases to non-communal causes.
  • The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council reported 51 communal incidents in December 2025 and alleged pre-election intimidation ahead of the February 12 parliamentary polls.
