Bangladesh Releases 2025 Minority-Incident Data, Says Most Cases Were Not Communal

Officials frame the police review as a transparency exercise prompted by recent attacks on minorities.

Overview

  • The Yunus-led interim government reported 645 incidents involving minorities in 2025, classifying 71 as having communal elements and 574 as non-communal.
  • Communal cases included 38 temple vandalism incidents, eight arson attacks, one theft, one murder and 23 other events, with police cases and arrests recorded in 50.
  • Non-communal incidents were attributed to crimes such as neighbourhood disputes, land conflicts, theft, rape and 172 unnatural deaths, with 390 cases registered and 498 arrests.
  • Authorities highlighted ongoing investigations and arrests as evidence of active policing, while stating overall law-and-order indicators are improving.
  • Minority-rights groups contested the classifications and flagged a recent surge in killings ahead of the 12 February election, as India urged Dhaka on 9 January to act swiftly against attacks.
