Bangladesh Election Commission Sets Roadmap for February Vote Before Ramadan

Consultations will begin in late September ahead of a planned December schedule announcement.

Overview

  • The commission said the official poll schedule will be issued at least 60 days before voting, with the announcement expected in the second or third week of December.
  • The Chief Adviser’s Office directed that voting be held before Ramadan, guiding the EC toward the first half of February 2026.
  • The roadmap outlines 24 priority tasks, including amendments to the RPO and other electoral laws, voter-roll finalisation, party registration, and rules for observers and journalists.
  • Stakeholder dialogues with parties, civil society, experts, media and student representatives are slated to run for roughly one to one-and-a-half months from late September.
  • Reactions diverged as the NCP and Jamaat-e-Islami decried the plan over the unimplemented July Charter and system details, while an election commissioner warned this could be the country’s most risky election and some groups, including the BNP, signaled support.
