Bangladesh Air Force Jet Crash Kills 19 at Dhaka School, Probe Launched

Overview

  • The Chinese-made F-7 BGI training jet departed Kurmitola airbase at 1:06 pm on July 21 and, after a suspected technical malfunction, crashed into the Milestone School and College campus in Uttara.
  • Flight Lieutenant Mohammed Toukir Islam was among the 19 killed after steering the malfunctioning aircraft away from more densely populated areas.
  • Dozens of predominantly student victims suffered burns and smoke inhalation injuries, with many in critical condition at the Combined Military Hospital and National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
  • Bangladesh Army personnel, fire service crews, ambulances and air force helicopters conducted rapid rescue and firefighting operations that extended into the evening.
  • Interim leader Muhammad Yunus declared July 22 a national day of mourning, mobilized a high-level Air Force investigation committee, pledging assistance for victims’ families.
