Banana Prices Plunge in Andhra Pradesh as Jagan Cites Rs 0.50 a Kilo, YSRCP Urges Relief
Opposition leaders blame policy failures, with calls for central intervention following reports of distress sales.
Overview
- YS Jagan Mohan Reddy said bananas are selling for as little as Rs 0.50 per kilogram and alleged farmers are being denied promised crop insurance, input subsidies and cultivation support.
- YSRCP Rajya Sabha member Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose raised the issue during Zero Hour and appealed to the Union Agriculture Ministry for immediate relief for growers in Rayalaseema.
- In Pulivendula, prices reportedly fell from about Rs 22,000 per tonne to Rs 8,000 within a month, a collapse Bose said has deepened losses for small and marginal farmers.
- Bose also linked the crisis to the 2025 Kharif season’s severe drought and erratic rainfall, saying banana cultivation dropped to 19–35% of normal in districts including YSR Kadapa, Kurnool and Anantapur.
- YSRCP contrasted the present situation with its 2019–2024 tenure, citing average prices near Rs 25,000 per tonne, special trains to Delhi and added cold storage, while no immediate response from the ruling TDP was reported.
