Banamex Index Finds 500% Surge in Digital Banking as Branches Decline in Mexico

Non-bank providers are taking a larger role in basic payments.

Overview

  • Contracts for mobile banking and digital services grew by more than 500% from 2017 to 2024, and the share of adults opening savings accounts via non-bank apps rose from 2.7% in 2021 to 10.3% in 2024.
  • Traditional branches are the only major access channel in clear retreat, falling about 16% since 2017, while ATMs grew over the period but stagnated and slipped versus 2023.
  • Point-of-sale transactions increased strongly, yet the share of establishments using bank-provided terminals fell as non-bank competitors expanded their TPV offerings.
  • Municipalities with very high inclusion rose to 135 in 2024, a small 5.5% of all municipalities that nonetheless account for 35.7% of the adult population and nearly 46% of GDP.
  • Financial exclusion remains largely intergenerational, with CEEY reporting that 95% of people outside the system have parents who were also excluded.
