Baltimore Police Release Body-Camera Videos From Three Officer Shootings

The disclosures followed press questions, highlighting looser state oversight of nonfatal shootings.

Overview

  • Baltimore police on Jan. 12 published footage from three officer-involved shootings dating to October, and none resulted in a person’s death.
  • Video from Oct. 26 shows Officers Latesha Holton and Sgt. Jaamal Johnson shooting a dog as it attacked its owner on St. Paul Street, and a stray round wounded the owner.
  • December footage shows officers tracking a car after a suspected drug deal near Division and Lanvale, where police say the driver reversed toward them in a dead-end alley; the driver was charged with assault.
  • In last week’s West Franklin Street stop, an officer spotted a handgun, was dragged about 100 feet as the driver sped off, then fired and wounded the driver, who faces an assault charge.
  • Police said the dog-shooting is under SIRT review, and the release came after Baltimore Sun inquiries as the state IID typically does not investigate nonfatal shootings and BPD policy has no firm release timeline.
