Baltimore Museum of Art to Present Amy Sherald’s ‘American Sublime’ With ‘Trans Forming Liberty’ This Fall

The Baltimore stop follows Sherald’s withdrawal from the Smithsonian after internal concerns were raised about the painting’s inclusion.

Overview

  • Exhibition runs November 2, 2025 through April 5, 2026 as a ticketed show: $18 general, $16 seniors, free for ages 17 and under, with free admission on opening day and Thursday nights.
  • Roughly 40 works will be on view, including Sherald’s portraits of Michelle Obama and Breonna Taylor.
  • Trans Forming Liberty, portraying a Black trans woman as the Statue of Liberty, will be included in the Baltimore presentation.
  • The survey was organized by SFMOMA and curated by Sarah Roberts after earlier stops at SFMOMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
  • The BMA will honor Sherald with an “Artist Who Inspires” award at its November 22 BMA Ball, highlighting her deep ties to Baltimore.
