Baltimore Museum of Art Takes Amy Sherald Retrospective After Smithsonian Dispute

The BMA will show the full survey, including the contested Trans Forming Liberty, after Sherald pulled the Washington stop over concerns she says compromised the work’s integrity.

Overview

  • Amy Sherald: American Sublime will run at the Baltimore Museum of Art from Nov. 2, 2025 through Apr. 5, 2026, presenting roughly 40 works spanning nearly two decades.
  • The Baltimore presentation will include Trans Forming Liberty alongside Sherald’s portrait of Michelle Obama and her memorial painting of Breonna Taylor.
  • Sherald withdrew the National Portrait Gallery show in July, saying staff raised internal objections and discussed removing or altering the painting; the Smithsonian says it proposed a contextualizing video to accompany the work, not replace it.
  • Organized by SFMOMA and seen earlier at the Whitney Museum, the survey shifts to Baltimore after the canceled Washington run.
  • The BMA calls the exhibition a homecoming for the MICA alum, will honor Sherald at its Nov. 22 BMA Ball, and will ticket the show with free admission for visitors 17 and under and select free entry times.
