Balearic Union Proposes €15 Peak-Season Tourist Tax to Deter Crowds

The plan is presented as a deterrent to high-season influxes rather than a revenue measure.

Overview

  • The CCOO union has called for a €15 per person, per night charge limited to July and August across Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera.
  • Current Balearic tourist tax rates range from about €0.50 to €4 per night with under-16s exempt and a 50% discount after the eighth night.
  • Media estimates suggest four adults in a luxury hotel for two weeks in peak season would pay about €840 in taxes, roughly £540 more than today’s rates.
  • Beyond the tax, the union urges a freeze on new tourist accommodation licences, a stressed-area housing designation and construction of 40,000 social homes.
  • The proposal is not government policy at this stage, and debate is intensifying given that roughly 27% of the UK’s Spain-bound travellers choose the Balearics.
