Balearic Government Imposes Targeted Road Controls for 12 August Total Solar Eclipse

Targeted closures will free emergency routes, reduce wildfire risk, enable safer public viewing during the brief totality.

Overview

  • Mallorca will experience totality on Wednesday, August 12 at about 20:31 CEST and the full phase is expected to last roughly 96 seconds.
  • The Balearic government published a detailed list of affected roads and says controls will generally run from about 15:00 to 21:00 with some local earlier starts, including Platja de Palma from 08:00 and Santa Ponça beginning the day before.
  • Measures apply to most motor vehicles with no general exemptions for motorcycles or mopeds, and suppliers will be barred from restricted zones unless they register as essential workers for specific accesses.
  • Officials have urged residents and visitors to plan travel in advance, avoid roadside parking and not light barbecues or fires to prevent congestion and lower wildfire risk during the event.
  • The eclipse path crosses northern Spain, north‑east Portugal and parts of the Balearic Islands, which has driven high visitor demand, coordinated scientific livestreams and repeated warnings to use certified eye protection.
