Overview
- During a special sitting called to oppose the Centre’s VB-G RAM G law replacing MGNREGA, Congress Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa demanded that Sukhwinder Sukhi clarify whether he belongs to SAD or AAP.
- Deputy Speaker Jai Kishan Rouri urged Bajwa to let Sukhi speak, while AAP minister Aman Arora said Sukhi holds the same position for AAP as Sandeep Jakhar did for Congress and asserted that Sukhi is with AAP.
- AAP members, including Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, countered Bajwa’s insistence by accusing Congress of being anti-Dalit during the noisy exchange on the House floor.
- When allowed to speak, Sukhi praised Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s government for free power, Aam Aadmi clinics, free travel, and use of MGNREGA funds, even as he sat with Akali MLAs on the Opposition benches.
- Sukhi crossed from SAD to AAP in August 2024 and was appointed chairman of a state warehousing corporation with cabinet rank, his resignation has not been accepted by the Speaker, a disqualification plea is pending in the High Court, and acceptance of his resignation would trigger a bypoll.
